5 Ways to Prepare for Your Next Dental Exam

Regular visits to the dentist's clinic are an important part of preventative dentistry. For starters, regardless of how well you take care of your teeth, there will be some tartar accumulation over time. Tartar facilitates tooth decay and gives your teeth a yellow color. During a dental appointment, you oral professional will scrape tartar off your teeth and provide a fluoride treatment.

Secondly, the dentist will perform a thorough examination of your mouth anytime you have an appointment. That gives the dentist an opportunity to detect any issues that are developing. As a general rule in preventive dentistry, the earlier the dentist finds an issue, the cheaper and less time-consuming the treatments to rectify the issue can be.

Here is a look at five simple things a person can do in preparation for a dental exam:

1. Floss and brush before the appointment

It is often best to give teeth a good cleaning before heading to the dentist's clinic. This reduces the amount of time the staff like dental assistants at the clinic has to spend cleaning them. When there are less debris and food particles on the teeth, issues like tartar buildup are easier to spot and address. Good oral hygiene is also an important part of preventive dentistry. Try not to eat anything right before the appointment.

2. Determine budget and payment method

Going to the dentist's office is stressful enough for some people, so avoid the extra burden of having to worry about what insurance coverage is available. Go over the insurance policy before the appointment, and figure out how much of the treatment is self-pay. Have the payment method like a credit card or checkbook and insurance card available before heading out.

3. Get there on time

Dentists appreciate patients who show up on time, so it is important that to respect the time set for the appointment. Remember, the dentist has other patients to deal with. In addition, patients who arrive at the dentist's office a few minutes before their appointment experience less anxiety during their treatments.

4. Communicate clearly

It is important to inform the dentist about any issues that are occurring during the appointment. That actually makes it easier for the dentist to do his/her job. Dentists are not perfect, and it is possible to miss an issue that is happening the patient does not bring it up. Once the dentist makes a proper diagnosis, he or she will discuss treatment options.

Also, be as honest as possible when filling out the dental history form. Some issues can be embarrassing, but it is often best to give the dentist as much information as possible.

5. Communicate any fears

Dental anxiety is a more common problem than most people realize. For those who have a tendency to miss appointments because of phobias, make sure the dentist is aware of this fact. There are many tools at a dentist's disposal to deal with dental anxiety. For example, nitrous oxide works well to keep patients relaxed.
