Got an Overbite? These Cosmetic Dental Procedures Can Help

Wondering which cosmetic dental procedure is going to fix your overbite? The majority of people can associate their overbite with genetics, which means that they were born with a jaw that is not able to properly line up with their upper teeth. When the shape or size of your teeth and jaw area does not include enough space to accommodate all of your teeth, an overbite is often the result. It can also happen when someone who has too much space in the mouth and jaw area, as this can allow teeth to grow apart from each other.

Overbites

While infants and children are more likely to be diagnosed with an overbite due to their constant sucking on bottles, thumbs and pacifiers, adults are more likely to receive an overbite diagnosis when they have received a TMJ diagnosis, continually chew on hard objects, grind their teeth often or have many family members who have been diagnosed with an overbite.

How a dentist treats an overbite

Even though overbites are easier to treat in younger patients because the jaw is still developing, adults are able to benefit from having their overbites treated, too. The first initial appointment is a consultation appointment, which is required so that the dentist is able to fully examine the mouth in order to come up with an appropriate treatment plan. Each patient's specific situation will determine the procedure that the dentist will use to help correct the overbite.

Common cosmetic dental procedures for overbite correction include:

Cosmetic procedure #1 - Braces - Braces are one of the more common cosmetic procedures chosen for correcting overbites and need to be worn anywhere between one to two years.

Cosmetic procedure #2 - Aligners - Aligners are similar to braces in that they work to move the teeth so there is no longer an overbite.

Cosmetic procedure #3 - Bite correctors - Bite correctors are used in combination with metal braces to help those with more serious overbites and work by concurrently moving the upper teeth backward and the lower teeth forward.
